Answers to common questions about contraceptive pill:

1- Is pill effective from the first pack?

YES if you started your pack during the first day of your period.

2- I had intercourses during the pill break and at the end of my period, how can I know if I might get pregnant?

You should not be worry because a normal take of the pill will protect you from getting pregnant even during the pill break of 7 days.

3- Is it possible to see a gynecologist to know which pill we can take but take the pill only later? Because I think, there is no need for me to take the pill if I do not have intercourses.

It is important to see a gynecologist as soon as possible when we might have intercourses. The appointments are sometime difficult to get. Besides, it will need some blood tests, and a new appointment with the blood tests results before to be able to start pill. Finally, it will be necessary to start your first pill during the first day of your period.

4- I am taking pill during 21 days then I stop for 7 days. I will to go in holidays with my boyfriend during the pill break and I will get my period at that time. What can I do in order to delay my period?

You need to go and see your gynecologist because it is possible, without stopping the pill, to delay the period. According to the type of pill (brand name) that you take, your gynecologist will tell you which pill from the pack you will have to keep on taking and when you will have to stop.

5- Since I am taking pill, I have less desire of intercourses during the ovulation period. Why?

You have less sexual desire because the pill blocks ovulation. Under pill, there is no ovulation anymore. Women who had a strong sexual desire during ovulation (peaks period of hormonal secretions) do not have anymore this “peak of desire”. For others women, who did not have “desire peaks” during ovulation, the pill will, in principle, not change their sexual desire. I am saying "in principle" because some women who have an unconscious desire of pregnancy can see their sexual desire decrease by taking pill.

6- Since I am taking pill, my breast are quite sensitive, what can I do to avoid this?

You should go and see your gynecologist in order to change your pill. With a weaker pill in estrogens, you should not have pain anymore in your breast.

7- I am taking pill since 5 years and I would like to stop it in order to have a child. I would like to know after how long the pill is not effective anymore.

After 7 days of pill break, an ovulation can occur. However, this ovulation might be of “bad quality”. Therefore, it is advised to avoid a pregnancy during the month just after you stop taking the pill.

8- Are pregnancy tests reliable?

Yes, if they have been made at least 15 days after the presumed fertile intercourse, but pregnancy tests are not reliable at 100%. If the test is negative, and if you have any doubts, do not hesitate to make another test a week after.
