Answers to common questions about intra uterine device:

1- Are intra-uterine methods as effective as pill?

No, not exactly. Its effectiveness is about 98% whereas the effectiveness of pill is almost 100%.

2- I will have a coil inserted and I have a friend who told me that it would be painful?

The coil insertion is made in the gynecologist’s office, it is a bit sensitive but not painful. Many gynecologists prescribe some antispasmodics before the insertion, in order that the insertion will be easier. Every woman feel the coil insertion differently so do not worry.

3- I have a contraindication to pill because of the estrogens that it contains. I also have profuse period, and because of that, my gynecologist advise me against coil with hormones! Is the coil with hormones contains estrogens?

Intra-uterine device with copper threads make the period more profuse than without contraception so it is not advised in your case. Coil with hormone contains only progesterone and does not contain estrogen. So it is not contraindicated in your case and besides it will have the consequence to decrease the abundance of your period.

4- I have a coil, which has been inserted 4 years ago. When do I have to change it?

Coil has to be changed every 4 to 5 years depending on the type of it. I advise you to go and see the doctor who inserted it into you in order to see if it needs to be changed. Do not take your time about this because a less effective coil can increase the risk of extra-uterine pregnancy.

5- Where the coil is inserted? in the vagina or in the womb?

In the womb of course! However, the threads of the coil hang a little way down from your womb into the top of your vagina.

6- How long after the removal of the coil, could I be able to get pregnant?

It is better to wait two cycles, after the removal of the coil to start a pregnancy, in order to let the time to the uterine mucous to become again normal. If a pregnancy happens before these two cycles, there is no risk of malformation but a slightly higher risk of miscarriage.
