Answers to common questions about menstruation
or menstrual period:

Menstrual period is the periodic discharge of blood and tissue from the uterus. From puberty until menopause, menstruation occurs about every 28 days, and generally shows but not always that there was no fecundation. Menstruation lasts on average of 5 days.

1- Is it possible to be pregnant and still have its period?

Yes, some women can have their period at the very beginning of their pregnancy.

2- Is it possible to get pregnant during menstrual period?

It is rare but it can happen. During ovulation, some bleedings can occur which can be taken for menstruation if the menstrual cycle is not regular.

3- Is it dangerous to have sex with a girl who has her period? If not, how can I convince her to have sex during her period? Thanks for your help!

Many women do not like to have sexual relations during their menstruation because they feel dirty! On a medical plan, there is no risk to have sexual relations during menstrual period, except if the woman is infected with aids because in that case the risk of infection is higher. To convince your partner, you can try to explain her that there is no risk to have sexual relation during menstruation.

4- How the menstrual cycle works?

The menstrual cycle starts the first day of the period and finishes the first day of the next period. In general, the cycle lasts 28 days but it can be a bit longer or shorter. For a cycle of 28 days, the ovulation occurs 14 days after the beginning of the period. The best time for pregnancy is during ovulation period.

5- How stress can disturb menstrual cycle?

Two glands located in the brain, hypophysis and hypothalamus determine the menstrual cycle. Hypothalamus is very sensitive to stress. All emotional or stressful perturbations will affect the hormonal secretions of the hypothalamus as well as the ovaries, which determine the menstrual cycle.

6- Can I have sexual relations if I wear a tampon?

Yes, but do not forget to take it out after the sexual relation. If you forget to take it out, it may cause bad odor or sometimes very bad infections.

7- Is it dangerous to have sexual relations without using a condom during menstrual period? We both did the HIV test and both tests were negative.

No. There is no risk because your tests are negative but have a wash after the intercourse because blood is a “source of microbes”.

8-   I have my period only twice a year. Can I still get pregnant?

Yes, you can get pregnant. Even if you had your menstrual period, only twice a year, ovulation still occurs and this twice a year about 14 days before your next period.

9- If a girl has her period, does it show undoubtedly that she is not pregnant? Can she get bleeding that she might take for her period when she is pregnant?

The fact that a girl has her period does not mean necessarily that she is not pregnant. In fact, some women have their period or little bleeding which they take for their period at the beginning of their pregnancy.
