Answers to common questions about the penis:

The penis is the male external genital organ. Its body consists of two parallel cylindrical bodies, the corpus cavernosum, and beneath them the corpus spongiosum, through which the urethra passes. The glans is covered with mucous membrane and unsheathed by the prepuce, or foreskin. The penis is homologous with the clitoris in the female. The average size of a non-erect penis (flaccid penis) is about 3 to 4 inches and about 5 inches to 6 inches when the penis is in erection.

1- Several people on the Internet claim to have a solution for enlarging a penis. Is it possible to enlarge a penis without surgery?

The only solution to increase the volume of a penis is to increase the thickness of the subcutaneous fat, which surrounds the erectile tissues; this is possible with an injection of fat coming from another part of the tissues under the skin surrounding the penis. Obviously, this is a surgical act. In this case, it is the diameter of the penis, which is increased, but not its length. There are no other serious solutions.

2- My problem is that I have a penis of normal size but rather thin. Are there any methods to enlarge penis? Thanks.

A n injection of fat coming from another part of the tissues under the skin surrounding the penis will increase the diameter of the penis but not its length. This surgical act will have to be renewed periodically.

3- I am 19 years old and my erect penis is not very large. Is it possible to increase the size of a penis from 2 to 4 cm? On internet, many web sites claimed that it is possible with very odd and very expensive drugs. What do you think of this?

There is only one surgical act, that can increase the size of the penis, but this will be visible only on the flaccid penis and not on the erect penis. All the other miracle methods sold on internet are ineffective, expensive and sometimes dangerous.

4- Can penis size be increased?

Yes. There are two surgical procedures to increase penis size. The first one consists of cutting the ligament that secures the base of the penis to the body. This gives between one-half and two inches of increased length to the penis; however, because the penis is no longer anchored to the body an erection no longer points 'up.' The second one is the process of removing fat from the backs of the thighs and injecting it into the body of the penis to make the penis thicker. Because the body rejects a significant portion of the injection this procedure may need to be repeated several times and each operation carries with it a severe risk of infection.

5- A sexologist advised me to take a hormonal treatment (testosterone), to develop my genitals because I have awful complexes (my penis is very small). What do you think about it? Is hormonal treatment very effective?

Male hormones have practically no action on the penis development after puberty, except for a man who has a real hormonal deficit, but you can still try this treatment. You also need to know that when you will stop the treatment, your penis will return to its initial size.

6- How do I measure my penis?

First, while standing, and in erection, gently angle your penis down until it is parallel to the floor. Set your ruler against your pubic bone just above the base of the penis, and measure to the tip.

7- What is the normal size of a penis? Flaccid? Erect?

The measure of the penis should be made from the mons veneris (pubic skin where the penis joins the body) to the tip of the glans and on the topside of the penis. The penis varies considerably in size but the average size of a non-erect penis (flaccid penis) is about 3 to 4 inches. The size of the flaccid penis does not determine the size of the erect penis. The average size of the erect penis ranges from about 5 inches to 6 inches.

8- Is there a link between the size of a flaccid penis and an erect penis? One of my friends has a small flaccid penis. My flaccid penis is bigger but he pretends that his penis is bigger when it is erect?

A small flaccid penis can be bigger when erects than a big flaccid penis which will be smaller when erects.

9 - What is a microphallus?

An adult microphallus is a fully-grown male erect penis that is under 3 inches (or about 8 cm).

10 - I am 16 and my penis is about 4.5 inches when erect. Will it still grow or is that as long as it will get? I heard that fat padding around the penis could make it shrink.

To know if your penis will get longer you have to wait the end of your puberty. If you have "fat padding" around the pubic area, it can make the penis appear to measure smaller because the flaccid penis becomes buried in it.

11- I have a small penis, is this can be a cause of sterility?

No, there is no link between the volume or the size of the genital organs and the fertility. In the same way, there is no link between fertility and sexuality. A sterile man can have a normal sexuality.

12- When I get an erection, my penis points straight up (vertically). I mean... towards my face. When I try to bend it to horizontal, it does go with some force but springs back to the vertical position immediately as soon as I let it go. Someone told me that this a real problem, and I will not able to have normal sex as my vertical penis will not make it into the vagina. In addition, is there a surgical solution where the skin that attaches my penis shaft to the body needs to be cut?

Some penises point straight up, while others point straight out (horizontal), and others point downwards. Others bend to the left, and others bend to the right. These are all natural penile variations. Penises that point in any of these directions can penetrate a vagina, so generally, it is better to not turning to surgery. Every man has to work with their sexual partner to find a comfortable position to have sex, depending on their penis directions and dimensions.

13- My penis bends down (or left, or right). Is there something wrong with it?

One-quarter of all penises bend in some direction and some bend downward even when erect. Unless the bend is severe or causes you pain, there is nothing wrong or abnormal about your penis. It should not interfere with sexual intercourse. Some people report that a downward-bending penis is easier to fellate.

14- I am 17 years old, and I just had sex with my boy friend. While he penetrated me, his penis bled really much (its skin tore). I am afraid right now, because I have blood of another person inside me, and I do not know if it is dangerous for my health...

You might have a rather brutal penetration, which could have tear the frenulum of your partner, or your partner was virgin. If your partner does not have a sexually transmitted disease, there is no problem for you. I still advise you to make an HIV test in a few weeks in order to reassure you completely.

15- Hello, I am a boy of 16 years old. My penis is 12cm long and my testicles are not big. Is my penis and testicles are going to get bigger?

You need to wait the end of your puberty. Your penis has already a normal size and I think that your testicles should get a bit bigger. Do not hesitate to seek your doctor if you have any doubt about your physical normality

16- If you masturbate, will it have an effect on the growth of your penis?

Definitely not. Whatever your age when you masturbate, this practice have no effect on the growth of the penis.

17- I would like to know if there are different shapes of penis. My husband has an erect penis, which points downwards; it is not a problem for us but is it a sign of sterility?

Yes, there are different shapes of penis and it is rare that an erect penis has a perfect straight shape. Some penis point straight up, while others point straight out (horizontal), and others point downwards. Others bend to the left, and others bend to the right and in every cases, it is not a sign of sterility.

18- I have my penis thick in the top of shaft and thin at the base. Is it normal? Do I have to stop masturbation?

Penises are all different in shapes and masturbation cannot affect the shape.

19- During erection, how can we know if we are contracting perineal muscles and not the penis?

Penis does not contain muscles so you are only contracted perineal muscles.
