Homosexuality corresponds to the emotional and sexual attraction to persons of the same sex.

Female homosexuality is also called "Lesbianism" or "Saphism" which comes from Sappho the ancient Greek poetess of Lesbos.

NO, homosexuality is not a disease. All major mental health organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA), have stated that homosexuality is not a mental disorder.

Some people realize quite quickly that they are being attracted to persons of the same sex, some other realize it much later. Some assume it, other not because of the society pressure, and numerous are the persons who are already engaged in heterosexual relationship, married and with kids.

Therefore, the percentage of homosexual is quite difficult to estimate. However, numerous studies show that about 10% of the population is homosexual but this number is still quite approximate.

In the middle of the last century, some scientists have tried to demonstrate that homosexuals and heterosexuals were physically and anatomically different but these hypotheses have never been proved. Indeed, it is impossible to tell if a man or a woman is homosexual or not only by looking at him or her and this, just because homosexuality is not a characteristic that we can see.

However, some cliché, as "homosexual man is effeminate", or "lesbian is a masculine woman", remain in everyone's mind. These stereotypes are harmful not only to homosexuals, but also to heterosexuals who chose a way of life and an appearance which are different to those dictated by society.

Still nowadays, men with long hair, women who do not wear makeup, women with short hair, men and women practicing some sports, or some jobs are automatically suspected of being homosexual.

The determination of the sexual orientation can be difficult for certain persons. A period of investigation and experiment can be then useful to help to discover our true selves, but will not determine inevitably our sexual orientation.

In other words, to have a homosexual experience does not necessarily mean that we are homosexual or not. It is necessary to give ourselves time to discover our sexual and emotional preferences.

One of the important stages of the acceptance of its homosexuality is the announcement to close family and friends of its sexual orientation ("coming out").

The reaction of the persons to whom we speak about it can vary from refusal to acceptance, from anger to fault. Thus, it is completely normal to be afraid of speaking to them about it. However, it is necessary to know that they will have to accept our sexual orientation too. Furthermore, you should not forget that many young persons, or less young, constantly question their sexual orientation, and that, every day, in our daily life, we meet persons of various sexual orientations, without knowing it.

It is important to accept its homosexuality to be able to feel good and assume its sexuality. Unfortunately, many prejudices and the fear of being rejected by its close family and friends make acceptance even harder.

Society has evolved through the years, and the mentalities are changing.

Various surveys show an increasing acceptance of homosexuals in society, even if there is still a long way to go before a total acceptance of it. Often, the acceptance is a tolerance, which is allowed as long as it is hidden.

The taboos around homosexuality still exist and the homosexual population is still too often confronted with demonstrations of contempt, discrimination and refusal, in family, workplace, and more generally in daily life. It is often the ignorance and the fear of the difference that prevent people and more particularly the youngest, from enjoying their life the way they want just because of their sexual preferences.
