Many heterosexuals think that in sexual relations between two women, one of them must have a penis in order to be able to satisfy sexually her partner. Furthermore, numerous pornographic films, often produced by heterosexual men, showing lesbians using accessories such as dildo during their sexual relations, gave a false idea about the behavior of two lesbians in a bed!

The use of dildo by lesbians suffers from the same false idea as the practice of sodomy by the homosexual men.

These two practices are the main images that people have of the homosexual life and both are qualified as "disgusting" by the outside world. In reality, the number of lesbians who use a false penis during their sexual relations is as low as the number of gay men practicing anal penetration. Indeed, studies have shown that among the 90% of lesbians who practice vaginal penetration, only a third of them use a dildo, the others using their fingers. For men only 36% have sodomized their partner!

Numerous lesbians find a sexual satisfaction by practicing cunnilingus (caresses and stimulation of the clitoris with the tongue). All heterosexual or homosexual women can have a vaginal or clitoral eroticism. In the case of a vaginal eroticism, the practice of cunnilingus will not be sufficient in order to reach orgasm; the vaginal stimulation using hand or the fingers is then used.

Note that numerous heterosexuals think that a "male" woman is active on the sexual plan whereas a "feminine" woman is passive. In reality, during the lesbian’s sexual relations, there is rather an alternation of activities without allocation of roles: a woman stimulates her partner up to the orgasm and she is then caressed by her. Some couples practice the mutual masturbation ("petting") in order to reach a simultaneous orgasm.

Sexuality between men has changed through the years, the division between the "masculine" homosexuals and the "feminine" homosexuals does not exist no more, just as for lesbians. Furthermore, homosexuals are more rarely exclusively active or passive in their sexuality; they tend to practice more and more an alternation of roles. The anal penetration between strangers is less and less common.

The gay men find a sexual satisfaction by practicing fellatio (72%), the mutual masturbation (82%) and the inter-femoral stimulation, which consists in placing his penis between the legs of his partner. Other less frequent activities as the "rimming" (bucco-anal stimulation) and the "fist-fucking", which consists in inserting his fist into the anus of his partner.

Thus, penetration is not an essential constituent of the sex for gay men just as for lesbians. However, it is very difficult to generalize in this domain because practices change according to countries, social class, time and fashion.
